Rewriting a poem

Writing a poem from scratch is difficult enough but rewriting the contents of a poem while keeping the theme is even more difficult. [i carry your heart with me(i carry it in] by E. E. Cummings is a heart felt love letter to someone (or something) that starts off rather soft then becomes increasingly deeper and deeper with meaning. The overall meaning of the poem is pretty straight forward; its an expression of deep, undying love. After having read this poem, our class was put into groups and asked to rewrite it in the frame of something relating to modern technology. Our group really struggled with this task as we had a difficult time understanding its meaning initially and also coming up with replacements for certain words.Our process was essentially to go line by line and replace any words that we could have to something relating to either modern vocabulary or technology. Our idea was to basically make it more understandable. In retrospect, we should have tried to understand the overall meaning of the poem first before changing the words so that the rewritten poem came together better as a whole. The ‘finished product’ came out to be something like a plagiarized version of the original.

Rewritten version:

I carry your laptop with me (I carry it in my bag)

I am never without it(anywhere i go you go,my baby;

and whatever I do is because of you,my baby)

I fear no fate (for you are my destiny, my sweet)I want no reality (for beautiful you are my reality, my truth) and it’s like you are whatever a moon is and you speaking is a ray of sunshine

Here is the something nobody knows (here is the root view of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a binary tree called life;which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
